Let’s advocate for fair financial mechanisms to fund adaptation in Africa

Why We need finance for adpatation

Africa is at a tipping point. While efforts to achieve the goals outlined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Paris Agreement could drive positive changes following nearly a decade of economic growth across Africa, climate change threatens to derail these gains. Given that temperatures in Africa are rising and are set to rise faster than the global average during the 21st Century, it is time to mainstream, scale up and accelerate support for climate change adaptation across the continent. Recent studies indicate it is likely that the true costs of adaptation will be substantially higher than originally projected and will require creative financial mechanisms and substantial engagement with the private sector to meet. Article 34 of the Sharm el-Sheikh Implementation Plan emphasizes inter alia that scaled-up public grants for mitigation and adaptation for vulnerable regions, in particular sub-Saharan Africa, would be cost-effective and have high social returns in terms of access to basic energy. At the 36th Summit of the African Union, the Heads of State requested the African Union Commission to support a broad-based and participatory process for the development of Africa’s common position on climate change that will include women, youth, the private sector, civil society, academia and governments.

what is the purpose of yAF Initiative?

The Initiative aims to mobilize African youths from diverse backgrounds and regions to advocate for a fair adaptation financing system for Africa. Africa is one of the most vulnerable regions to climate change impacts, with devastating effects such as droughts, floods, and extreme weather events affecting millions of people’s livelihoods. Despite being the least responsible, Africa has the least capacity to adapt. The YAF Africa initiative, part of the Building Resilience and Adaptive Capacities in Africa Through Enhanced Renewable Energy Access (BRACE Africa) program, aims to improve access to reliable, affordable, sustainable energy sources and advocate for increased financing for adaptation, including clean and affordable energy for adaptative purposes.

OBJECTIVES

To advocate for increased Grant based funding for adaptation in Africa from developed countries and international financial institutions.
To promote the participation of African countries in the design and implementation of adaptation projects.
To ensure that the financing mechanism is transparent, accountable, and accessible to all African countries.
